New DNA Profiling providers
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MEMBERS
Due to recent changes in DNA profiling technology the DCSNZ will accept ONLY G1 TECHNOLOGY DNA SIRE VERIFICATION CERTIFICATES as of November 2011.
Council has made this decision to ensure future DNA profiles are compatible with the society’s historical records. All bulls recently profiled using G3 technology will need to be reprofiled at the expense of DCSNZ. The Herd Registrar will contact you if necessary. Council apologises for any inconvenience this change may cause to members.
Council recommends the use of Tail Hair Samples rather than the Tissue Samples used for G3 technology. Prices given below assume the use of Tail Hair Samples as opposed to other types of samples. Additional processing costs may apply to other types of samples.
Instructions For Tail Hair Sample Collection
1. Select 20 to 30 hairs from the switch/brush of the tail i.e. thick, coarse hairs. The hair should be clean and dry.
2. Wrap the hairs around your finger or pen and pluck with a rapid, sharp motion.
3. The hooked or bulbous hair roots from under the skin should be clearly visible. If they are not visible, try again.
4. If more than one test is required repeat the procedure to obtain another 20 to 30 hairs.
5. Place the hairs into an unused sample envelope (available from Carol Ring).
Recognised Laboratories
Genomnz (G1 DNA Profiling & Parent Verification)
If you wish to use Genomnz, please send the completed sample submission form, tail hairs and $30 fee per sample to Carol Ring. Carol will then forward the sample to Genomnz. Genomnz forms can be downloaded from the "Members Only" area, or obtained from Carol.
If requesting Parent Verification, you will need to supply a copy of the Genetic Profile Certificate for the Sire and/or Dam as required. These must be G1 certificates listing the 12 or 14 ISAG-standardised markers, together with their 2 or 3 digit codes. G3 certificates cannot be used for Parent Verification as they do not contain the marker information. COPIES ONLY of the certificates should be sent, with the originals being retained for your own records.
For the small number of members who have previously been sending samples directly to Genomnz, please note that you will need to send them via Carol in future. This change is at the request of Genomnz, and is because the lab has limited staff to deal with incoming samples and payments. They prefer to deal with ONE person in each breed society, who can check the submission forms for completeness, check that Genetic Profile Certificates have been included for Parent Verification etc. We have managed to hold the cost at just $1.25 per sample more than what Genomnz were charging members until now.
